A hui hou Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia
This week, the voyaging canoes Hōkūleʻa, along with her sister canoe Hikianalia, departed Hilo to continue the Moananuiākea Voyage. This global journey is deeply rooted in ancestral knowledge, cultural pride, and a shared kuleana to protect our planet.
This departure marks a powerful milestone. Paused in 2023 due to the tragic fires in Lahaina and unpredictable El Niño weather patterns, the voyage now continues with renewed purpose. As Hōkūleʻa sails once more, she carries a message of healing, resilience, and reconnection, not just for Hawaiʻi, but for the world.
Since arriving in Hilo on May 21, the crew has worked tirelessly preparing the canoes and training for the weeks at sea ahead. Their dedication speaks to more than seamanship, it reflects aloha ʻāina, the profound love and responsibility for land, ocean, and the global community through every step of the voyage.
Their next destination: French Polynesia. The crew will make landfall in Taputapuātea on Ra‘iātea, a sacred homeland of Polynesian navigation, and in Papeʻete, Tahiti. There, they will spend a month engaging with local communities, honoring deep ancestral ties, and sharing the teachings of wayfinding and mālama honua – caring for our Island Earth.
At HI Inspired, we are humbled by and grateful for the mission of Hōkūleʻa. Her voyage is a powerful reminder that every action, no matter how small, can be rooted in care, respect, and purpose. Our mission is also to carry those same values with intention and to give back to the community that inspires us every day. In all we do, we aim to be mindful of aloha ʻāina and uphold the spirit of mālama honua while caring for our island Earth and each other.
A hui hou, Hōkūleʻa—may the winds carry you with purpose and peace.
We sail with you in spirit,
The HI Inspired Team
