Celebrating Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea: Restoring Life, Responsibility, and Aloha

Every year on July 31, communities across Hawaiʻi come together to celebrate Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea, a day that honors the restoration of Hawaiian sovereignty in 1843, when the Hawaiian Kingdom was peacefully returned to the authority of King Kamehameha III.

On that historic day, the King proclaimed the words that would become Hawaiʻi’s state motto:

“Ua Mau ke Ea o ka ʻĀina i ka Pono.”
“The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.”

While ea can be translated as sovereignty, it also means life, breath, and rising. Today, Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea reminds us that caring for Hawaiʻi is about much more than remembering history. It is about living with integrity, honoring culture, protecting our natural resources, and ensuring that future generations can continue to thrive.

At HI Inspired, this message resonates deeply with everything we create.

Our products are inspired by Hawaiʻi’s breathtaking landscapes, unique wildlife, and the hardworking people who call these islands home. We believe every design should do more than simply look beautiful, it should encourage a deeper appreciation for the places and traditions that inspire it.

Giving back is also part of our purpose. A portion of every purchase supports Hawaiian nonprofit organizations chosen by our customers, helping strengthen the communities, environments, and cultural programs that make these islands so special.

As we reflect on Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea, we are grateful for the privilege of living, creating, and sharing the beauty of Hawaiʻi with others. May we all continue to mālama ʻāina, support one another, and carry forward the spirit of ea, not only as a remembrance of the past, but as a commitment to the future.

Happy Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea from all of us at HI Inspired!
